19 Oct 1UP Starter Kit Receives Sappi Ideas That Matter Grant
8 80 Cities and Urban Minds teamed up this year to develop the 1UP Starter Kit, designed to help high school students launch pop-up projects in their local communities. Combining an urban planning context and the design thinking approach, the 1UP Starter Kit would be a youth-friendly, step-by-step guide to tackling challenges students may see in their neighbourhood public spaces, such as parks, playgrounds, bus stops and parking lots. Using encouraging and accessible language and visuals, the kit will take students on a journey of discovery that is challenging yet rewarding.
We are honoured and thrilled to be one of the 10 grant recipients of the Sappi Ideas That Matter program this year, among the likes of IDEO and Creative Reaction Lab. The program has helped over 500 projects bring ideas and designs into action to drive positive change, and we’re encouraged to know that the judges also saw the importance of youth engagement in our cities. This grant will help us produce a test run of 100 starter kits and bring them to 5 schools in the Greater Toronto Area in our pilot year.
