Why Do You Have to Close Streets to Cars for an Open Streets Program?

It’s the beginning of 2016 and you’re ready to start planning an Open Streets program in your city with one or two dates (maybe even three or more?)

You’ve planned a route – or at least have one in mind – perhaps you’ve even used our route planning tool.

Now you’re starting to have conversations with key stakeholders, and for the most part, they’re supportive of the concept. (Fist pump!)

And then you receive this question:

“Do you have to close the streets to cars? Why can’t open streets happen on the sidewalks or in parks?”
